Vase with painted decoration of an iris
Description
This vase from the De Witte Zwaan collection is made of dark purple, opaque glass. Its simple shape is made special by the iris decoration, applied by hand to the glass with oil paint. This technique is called cold painting because the painting was not fired in a kiln. Therefore, the painting lies on top of the glass and is vulnerable to wear. The vase was likely intended for decoration, not utilitarian use. The vase is one of the simpler products from the Von Poschinger factory. The factory owes its fame primarily to Art Nouveau glassware, which exploits the possibilities of glass to the fullest, in shapes, iridescence, and appliqués.
