Gallé cameo glass vase with iris decoration
Description
This vase is blown from multi-layered glass with a cameo decoration of etched and engraved irises and leaves on a milky white background. The vase is signed "Gallé." Since this vase was produced after Emile Gallé's death, it is an Etablissement Gallé object. Gallé glass is characterized by a passion for natural subjects, a result of Gallé's extensive botanical knowledge and his love of nature. Plants and flowers are the most common subjects, but insects such as dragonflies and butterflies also frequently appear in his designs. Gallé found his inspiration primarily in his own immediate surroundings, the natural beauty of Nancy. After Gallé's death in 1904, his wife continued running the factory, and from 1914 onward, his son-in-law Paul Pedrizet took over management. The factory closed in 1931.
