Stained glass window with decoration of blue irises
Description
When it became possible to produce large pieces of glass commercially in the nineteenth century, the artistic use of stained glass also gained popularity. This was largely due to the efforts of the American Louis Comfort Tiffany (1848-1933), who presented his famous Tiffany lamp at the World's Columbian Exposition in Chicago in 1893, quickly establishing his international reputation. Besides lampshades, his company also produced stained glass windows with graceful motifs from nature. The stained glass window from the De Witte Zwaan Collection was likely made in Belgium at the beginning of the twentieth century by an unknown artist in the then-popular Art Nouveau style.
