Makkum polychrome tile tableau with a vase of flowers, including tulips
Description
The Tichelaar pottery factory in Makkum, established in 1689, initially produced primarily tiles but around 1890 switched to producing decorative pottery, often with polychrome decorations. This tile tableau is an example. The tableau in the De Witte Zwaan collection consists of 3 x 2 tiles. A lush bouquet of flowers, including tulips, is depicted in a two-armed vase against a light background. In the center of the vase is a landscape with a farm and a windmill, and a sailboat on the water.
