Oval silver-plated bronze jardinière in Art Nouveau style with tulip decoration

Description

Around 1894, brothers Eugène and André Saglier took over the goldsmith's workshop from their already famous father, Victor Saglier. Victor had founded the workshop in 1842 on Rue d'Enghien in Paris and had built a good reputation during his working years. His work included vases, tableware, candlesticks, and mirrors. His sons were known for their beautiful Art Nouveau designs. Most of their products were made of silvered bronze, but they also collaborated with artists such as Gallé and Daum, who worked with other materials. The silvered bronze jardinière, or planter, in the De Witte Zwaan collection is a beautiful example of the Saglier Frères' Art Nouveau style. The entire surface consists of flowing, natural lines that resemble plant stems, leaves, or wild grass. As a focal point, beautifully delicate tulips have been added here and there, seemingly growing around the bowl. Tulips were very popular around the turn of the century and are therefore a common theme on early twentieth-century utensils.
