Portrait of Daan Hoogewoning, one of the three founders of NV. Hollands Bloembollenhuis Hobaho
Description
This portrait of Daan Hogewoning, co-founder of the Hobaho, from the De Witte Zwaan Collection was created by Amsterdam painter Bart Peizel.
Peizel began his working life at a bank in Almelo but decided after just a few years that he preferred to become a painter. After attending various art schools in Groningen and Amsterdam, he rose to become one of Amsterdam's most beloved portrait painters. This was partly due to his marriage to Thérèse Ansingh in 1917, after which he became part of the Amsterdam Joffers circle. The Joffers was the name for wealthy women who studied at the Amsterdam art academy. Thanks to his wife's connections, Peizel became part of the Amsterdam art scene, which also included a large circle of wealthy businessmen. Professors, industrialists, and regents and regentesses all had their portraits captured by Peizel, who appreciated his rather traditional style.
Peizel was a highly productive painter, particularly famous for his numerous portraits. Besides his well-known portraits, Peizel also painted still lifes, landscapes, and cityscapes.
