Portrait of Hein Bader, one of the founders of the NV Hollands Bloembollenhuis Hobaho
Description
Hein Bader was a busy man. Born in Noordwijkerhout, Bader was primarily a flower bulb grower by profession. He also served as an alderman in the municipality of Sassenheim for approximately 20 years. Furthermore, in 1937, he became a member of the Provincial Council of South Holland and chaired the General Association of Flower Bulb Growers in his hometown of Sassenheim.
Besides his own busy schedule, Bader, co-founder of Hobaho, had to perform tremendously as an auctioneer. He touted and sold flower bulbs with a resounding voice. One can imagine that in a crowded hall packed to the rafters with loud male voices, this was an extraordinary task. Yet, several auctioneers managed to maintain this day in and day out, largely because they managed to maintain a friendly atmosphere in the auction room with a few jokes here and there.
The portrait of Hein Bader from the De Witte Zwaan Collection was painted by Hans van Dorp. Unfortunately, nothing is known about this artist. The portrait of Bader shows numerous traces of craquelure, small cracks in the surface. This was likely caused by the use of asphalt-based or bituminous paint. This type of paint was particularly popular in the 19th and early 20th centuries because of its brown, warm, and saturated "old master"-like tones. Inexpert use of this type of paint can lead to significant paint deformation, as can be seen in the background.
