Rozenburg/Amphora eggshell porcelain cup and saucer with iris decoration

Description

The NV Haagsche Plateelbakkerij Rozenburg was a pottery factory that was in production from 1883 to 1914. The so-called eggshell porcelain, which the factory produced from 1899 onwards, was particularly successful. Interest in this very thin type of porcelain was enormous and popular with collectors and museums. Rozenburg eggshell porcelain features graceful Art Nouveau shapes with stylized decorations, primarily of flowers and birds against a creamy white background. One of the most important pottery painters of Rozenburg porcelain was Sam Schellink. In 1897, Schellink was appointed master painter, making him responsible for both designing the decorative scenes and painting these products. Schellink continued to work for the Rozenburg Pottery until its bankruptcy in 1914. After this, a large part of the factory was taken over by the Amphora Tile and Faience Factory in Oegstgeest. Schellink also moved with the factory, along with some of the inventory already manufactured at the Rozenburg factory. Schellink subsequently decorated these unfinished pieces under the name Amphora. The cup and saucer in the De Witte Zwaan Collection are a prime example. They are the finest eggshell porcelain from the Rozenburg factory: ultra-thin, bright white porcelain, elegantly decorated all around by master painter Sam Schellink. See here for an identical cup and saucer model. Only the decoration differs.
