Rozenburg eggshell porcelain bonbonnière with tulip decoration
Description
The NV Haagsche plateelbakkerij Rozenburg was a pottery factory that operated from 1883 to 1914. The eggshell porcelain, which the factory produced from 1899 onwards, was particularly successful. Interest in this very thin type of porcelain was enormous and popular with collectors and museums. Rozenburg eggshell porcelain features graceful Art Nouveau shapes with stylized decorations, primarily of flowers and birds against a creamy white background. The company employed many well-known artists, such as Theodoor Colenbrander, known for his dishes, bowls, and vases with exotic shapes and whimsical decorations; Jan Toorop for his monumental reliefs; and Jurriaan Kok for his painted eggshell porcelain. One of the most important pottery painters of Rozenburg porcelain was Sam Schellink. In 1897, Schellink was appointed master painter, making him responsible for both designing the decorative scenes and painting these products.
The bonbonnière in the De Witte Zwaan collection and the cup and saucer ( see here ) are examples of the most beautiful eggshell porcelain the Rozenburg factory had to offer: ultra-thin, bright white porcelain elegantly decorated all around based on a design by the best designer there was: Sam Schellink.
