Two earthenware bowls and dishes with a tulip motif

Description

Theo Colenbrander originally trained as an architect, but quickly developed into a pottery designer and decorator. He was known for his unique style, a combination of exotic-looking models combined with abstract and stylized decors. As an artistic visionary, he frequently clashed with board members. For example, his tenure as artistic director at the Rozenburg and Zuid-Holland potteries ended because he refused to make concessions based on financial considerations. At the Ram pottery, he was given the opportunity to develop models and decors according to his wishes. He was already in his eighties at the time. For the Ram pottery, Colenbrander designed dozens of new models based on nature, particularly flora, abstracting the plant and flower shapes. Both bowls and saucers in the De Witte Zwaan collection are decorated with abstract tulips in blue, turquoise, purple, yellow, and red on a beige background. The insides of the bowls are turquoise.
