Two Battersea candlesticks with loose bobeches decorated with harbor scenes and tulips, among other things.

Description

Battersea enamelware was made at York House in Battersea, a district of London, by Stephen Theodore Janssen between 1753 and 1756. Due to the high quality of the products produced in Battersea, York House quickly gained a good reputation. Unfortunately, this success was short-lived, as the factory was forced to close in 1756 due to Janssen's personal bankruptcy. The candlesticks in the De Witte Zwaan collection demonstrate the high quality of York House Battersea's production. The shape is elegant, based on earlier silver models, the enamel is bright white, and the paintings are refined and painted in the Rococo style popular at the time.
