White and yellow tulips in a glass vase

Description

Marie Wandscheer was born in Amsterdam in 1856. From the age of nineteen, she took lessons from the renowned drawing and painting teacher Valentijn Bing. Thanks in part to her training under Bing, she was admitted to the "ladies' class" of the Rijksacademie van Beeldende Kunsten in 1876, where she was taught by Professor August Allebé. It was during her studies that Wandscheer met other Amsterdam painters such as Lizzy Ansingh, Jo Bauer, Coba Ritsema, and Suze Robertson. From 1895 onward, she lived in Ede for the rest of her life, where she became friends with Willem Witsen, from whom she took lessons. She painted many flowers as well as figure paintings. The work in the De Witte Zwaan collection demonstrates how she managed to transform a simple subject into something special. Against the dark background, the yellow and white tulips are painted from all sides, beautifully highlighting the diversity of the tulips and tulip leaves. All of this is set in a simple glass, composed entirely of reflections.
