Silver ‘wearer’ medal with a tulip on the obverse and the head of a man on the reverse.
Description
The silver medal is small. It features an image of a tulip on the obverse, and a man's head on the reverse. The man is looking to the left and is wearing a headdress resembling a jester's cap. Two "clouds" emerge from the man's mouth. The purpose of this medal is unknown. Perhaps it contains symbolic 17th-century imagery that we no longer understand. The tulip and the man in the jester's cap may be related, alluding to the tulip mania of 1637. The man in the jester's cap is a fool and a victim of the speculation wave. In Roemer Visscher's "Sinnepoppen," one of the most popular emblem collections, you'll find an emblem that refers to tulip mania. Above the illustration of two tulips and bulbs is written: "A fool and his money are soon parted." See here for the tulip frenzy.
