Silver mustard pot with tulip decoration
Description
The mustard pot in the De Witte Zwaan collection has a wide, round base featuring embossed images of various leaves. The base tapers towards the round pot. The entire surface of the pot is decorated with various embossed images of leaves and flowers, including tulips. A hinged lid with a beautiful silver tulip bud sits atop the pot. Mustard pots always had a glass inlay because the vinegar in mustard corrodes the silver. This glass inlay is missing here. The mustard pot has no silver hallmarks, but its stylistically dating date is from the second half of the 17th century and possibly attributable to Henderick Klingerborch, who worked as a silversmith in Venlo from 1654 to 1667. After his death in 1667, his widow continued the business. It is not unreasonable that she was no longer able to use her husband's maker's mark and sold unmarked silver from his hand.
